To mix metals, or not to mix metals, that is the question: Whether ’tis prettier to harmonize one color, or to take to your arms (ears and neckline) a mix of them all. As a wardrobe stylist, I’m not opposed to any of it.
Your metal preference is a part of your personal style. But the magic is in your natural coloring – your hair and eye shades and your skin tone have already decided what looks best on you. If that sounds like a lot to figure out on your own, that’s exactly what a good stylist and a great jewelry store are here for.
If you’re a devotee of gold, chances are your undertone leans warm (not literally, my menopausal friends). Think olive or peachy skin, green or brown eyes and hair with golden caramel tones. Gold harmonizes with all of that, catching the same warmth already at play and offers a healthy radiance.
Silver loyalists tend to lean cool, with pink or blue undertones, and hair that’s ashy, dark brown, black, white or gray. Platinum, white gold, sterling silver and stainless steel play off that coolness in the same way, flattering it and creating a soft vibrancy.
And if you genuinely can’t tell, or you love both equally? Lucky you, you’re probably a neutral undertone which means you can wear whichever one matches your outfit of the day. Or try a mixed-metal stack, which, when done well, looks confident and so chic.
Ultimately, undertones are guidelines, not rules to rigidly live by. Wear gold because it makes your skin glow. Wear silver because it makes you feel cool and clean. Wear both, layered together for contrast, and find the balance that looks good, and makes you feel great!
fashionably yours,
Stratton
